4 Things to Know When Chartering a Yacht in San Diego
This is it! You have decided to spend some big bucks for an experience of a lifetime by renting out a yacht. Whether you’re a visitor or resident in San Diego, there are only a few activities that are as classy and memorable as a yacht charter trip. The bottom line, it’s an incredible experience.
However, many yacht charter clients get so excited that they tend to overlook the other aspects of the trip. While it’s true that luxury yacht rentals accommodate you all the way through, there are still some things that should be done on your end.
What to Do for Your Yacht Rental in San Diego
Here are the steps you should take to get the most out of your San Diego yachting trip.
1. PLAN YOUR ITINERARY
Before stepping onboard your luxury yacht, you need to work with the broker and captain to plan the itinerary. When it’s a single-day charter, your options are generally fewer and depend on the type of yacht charter that you prefer. Are you looking for a quiet family trip? Or perhaps a fun celebration with your friends? The Catamaran is great for a large group while the Meridian is great for a fun day with the family. After you select the yacht rental that’s right for you, make sure to figure out which amazing locations you’d like to visit during your San Diego yacht charter.
For a multi-day luxury yacht rental, you can plan the specifics of the itinerary before the trip. This gives the captain and crew enough time to make the necessary arrangements like procurement of supplies, restaurant reservations, and onshore excursions.
2. Have Your PREFERENCE SHEET Ready
Your broker will ask you to fill in the preference sheet for the yacht charter. Basically, it’s a form that specifies the needs of all the guests. The sheet includes information like medical details, food and beverage preferences, preferred activities, and many others. When filling out the preference sheet, make sure that the needs of all the guests are accounted for so that your luxury yacht rental will go smoothly.
3. MIND THE YACHT CHARTER RULES
Each luxury yacht rental in our inventory is unique with its own crew, water toys, and vessel rules. The charter rules are something that you can’t afford to overlook. Remember, you are only renting the vessel and you need to respect the crew and most especially, the rules.
There are certain rules that are consistent within the yachting industry such as the “Barefoot” rule, no drinking of red wine, not using hardshell luggage, and many others. If you are unclear about the rules, it’s best to ask your broker or the captain.
It’s also worth mentioning that you should respect the local laws of your charter destination.
4. Know the Tipping Policy
One of the most common questions that yacht guests have is about tipping. How much should you tip the yacht charter crew? How do you leave a tip for a private charter?
According to the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA), the general tipping rule of thumb is between 10 to 15 percent of the weekly yacht charter fee, not counting the running expenses and taxes. For tipping, it’s customary to put the entirety of the tip in an envelope that is given to the crew during the last day of the charter.
When tipping, it’s best to leave it to the captain to decide who gets how much. The crew works as a team, so they should be rewarded as a team.
